Mortal Thoughts

A poem

Oppositional to teenaged

Immortality,

Envisioning car wrecks

Around each corner

Mid-journey

Which never come,

Even if the tension remains

electric.

-

Walking, ‘ten toes on the cement’

But the rain I once trusted, loved even,

Stripped me of my skin.

-

Left behind a

Withered body

To heal amidst

The flood.

-

These wheezing lungs

Are useless,

But use them

I must.

-

And on those nights I spend

Soothing my stomach

Pains with poison

(For my choices

Are so limited)

I remember those

Long-agos when my body

Felt at peace.

-

Now my mirror image

Reflects a broken piece,

Just a fragment

Of something

I wish I still could be.

-

Days pass,

Sand morphs into glass,

But this body has no miracles left

And stays the terrible same.
