Rain on the windshield, Van

Halen on the stereo, telling me

I'm old enough

to dance the night away

while pedestrians loiter in the car

in front of me

on I-85, southbound--

Allman Brothers telling me

there's only one

way out, feeling myself tied

to the whipping post.

I serenade my own soul

with revival,

seven turns into bougainvillea

for this midnight rider

without a blue sky

all because

you don't love me.

Some dreams will never be.
