Moon Bugs

They flash to convey a desire for love;

A twinkling form of twilight conversation.

Bioluminescence more captivating than that of the mourning dove...

The summer months bring forth these effortless beauties.

Like floating stars against the night sky,

They show up when the humidity hits, emiting light like it is a job duty.

Just like the summer months, I pray they never die.

Memories of chasing them return everytime the Midwest gets warm.

Plump, hot cheeks sticky with ice cream,

My little sisters' fingers pointed wildly as they began to swarm.

The smog of the city now makes me believe it may have been a dream,

Dad whistling for us to come in to beat the heat-induced storm.

The month of June is finally here,

the moon bugs are flying near.
