Monsters in the Dark

For all the kids who were friends with the closet monster.

An old, decrepit darkened hallway lit only by the light of opened windows.

The girl with the big brown eyes.

Wise beyond her years,

She knows.

She understands the whispers of the night

She sees the ghosts, ghouls, and goblins.

She sees the fairies, pixies, and sprites.

She feels the flow of life through her finger tips,

Dances to the beat of the universe

She learns early on what its like to be

Different.

Weird.

Lonely.

She learns to lie about her feelings Act normal.

Doesn't draw attention to herself

Doesn't pay to attention to her friends

She begins to loose sight of them.

Slowly at first.

The energy is at the woman’s fingertips but its lost much of its potency.

How she wishes she could be the girl.

The one who knew the rhythm of the universe.

The one who never felt safer than with the monsters in the dark.

For my Grandma, who never discouraged my imagination. I love you, always will.
