Misunderstood

You know who you are

Causing another pain

Is the opposite of what I do.

I DO NOT speak ill of others.

If you knew me,

You would know that.

I was misunderstood.

*

I was trying to be supportive.

You mixed my words around,

Misinterpreting them

In an unholy, convoluted way.

I should have spoken up,

But you told me not to.

Ever the people-pleaser, I abstained.

I was misunderstood.

*

Now, it festers within me,

Like a leprous sore,

Flaring,

Overflowing with poisonous pus,

Penetrating its toxic venom

Into my sensitive veins,

Into my very soul.

I was misunderstood.

*

I can never set it right.

We will have minimal contact,

Passing, mundane communication,

If any.

That's the way you want it?

That's the way it will be,

Because I'm a people-pleaser.

To make this clear,

I was misunderstood
