I saw the Milky Way
on the path to our room under
the dark skies of East Africa
an arc
so difficult to see
when home
with the light pollution of
streetlights
porch lights and car headlights
sports courts and shopping centers
backyard decorative lights
so cozy, those
disruptive Edison bulbs
blinding the night sky views

dark skies reveal
what one cannot see
under the glittering lights
of safe streets, and
birds can fly their routes in
safety, in the darkness
that humans want to obliterate
