Midsummer Classic
A villanelle about Major League Baseball's annual All-Star Game

In July the best will take the field,
When summer heat and legends both ignite,
The Midsummer Classic won’t conceal.
A Derby crack, a roar that makes crowds yield,
The coast-to-coast names flashing in the light —
In July the best will take the field.
From AL blue to NL gold they kneel,
For one night rivals trade a glove, not spite,
The Midsummer Classic won’t conceal.
The rookie grins where veteran stars reveal
How fastball dreams are born and burn out bright,
In July the best will take the field.
No standings count, no curses to unseal,
Just seams, chalk lines, and a park alight,
The Midsummer Classic won’t conceal.
So raise a cheer for every bat and wheel,
For baseball’s brief, unburdened, pure delight —
In July the best will take the field,
The Midsummer Classic won’t conceal.
