Don't Turn Around challenge - The Prompt: Write a poem about the feeling that something is behind you.

You sense it before you see it. This challenge builds on anticipation and the fear of what stays just out of view.

Stay with that feeling of being followed or watched. The presence may never fully appear, but it should shape the poem’s movement and tone.

Think about how the tension sticks even when nothing is proven. What’s left unseen can feel just as strong as anything you show.

What the hell!

Please tell

me God

what is odd

about me

wanting to see

what is behind me

~

Memories gone

Even a song

my favorite tune

send me to the moon

Is my life as I know it

going to be over? Shit!

Bit by bit

~

"You passed the dementia quiz"

Said nurse Liz

"You can explain things too well"

Said Doctor Bell

The neuropsych said "No

markers for dementia, your low

score is attention,

so

If you are not paying attention

you won't remember"

~

"Your high score is multitasking, too.

You have too much to pay attention to

so you won't remember everything you do"

The cancer lady says,

"We will balance your hormones."

Give you something to assist with that.

The progesterone cream helped and what

a difference when I went off. No brain

and it wasn't a brain drain.

~

I have friends in dementia

and those fast approaching, Ya,

and am I one of those?

Just suppose

it has been right there

all the time, just waiting where

no one else could see,

back there watching me

lose it!

Oh shit!
