Me And Time
Say It Plainly

I want to hold onto
All those memories that flash by when I’m busy with something else
They were the ones meant to show the way
Not those who shout about their rights
In the blinding light of day
Waiting patiently for someone who never comes
But then a light appears, something entirely different
I scratch the dog’s back
The dog offers me his paw
A few days later, someone tried to get rid of him
My dad, without a word
But the dog came back
Straight into my arms
Striding proudly down the street where he lived
Fearless, my hero in a white cape
*
Then comes a second flash
Turning the first memory to dust
We are wiser now; no one will impose anything on us
And everyone pretends nothing happened
I was there, yet not there at all
Watching those instinctive attempts to cross the line
Nothing looked or tasted right, and yet
I felt like a winner, because I knew
I was the good one
Someone else, the bad
A lack of understanding
Key issues overlooked, a sense of danger in the air
Someone rallied others to champion a flawed cause
I do not care, the right time will come
When all of this sees the light of day
Free from falsehoods and deceitful judgments
*
Suspended between the present and the past
I steel myself for the third act
Gathering the shadows of things
Their kaleidoscopic images
Indelibly etched in my memory
I toil ceaselessly during the harvest
Only time keeps me company
We traverse the scorched earth
Nothing binds us; it is an infernal eternity
We, two prisoners on the road
Solitary wanderers on the right path
We ask for little, just a few coins and words
That we hold close to our hearts
One day we will tell the whole story
And it will be worth it
We gather our belongings
We walk toward the sun
Our past shrinks to a cloud in the sky
When the rain falls, it will wash it away
All those difficult verses
Will become the easiest to write down
Light as a feather, carrying no plague
Locusts will not bring us ruin
Only a good word will spread everywhere
Bringing news to those who had lost their way
That is all, and nothing more
