Marionettes

A free verse poem

During the pandemic,

we were no longer free humans;

we became marionettes,

inanimate objects

that were constantly being leashed,

monitored, manipulated, and put away.

I was one of those puppets

who became controlled

miserable, nit-picked, and chained

to a closet door handle

in someone’s room.

We were messed up,

our steps became slower and softer,

always being held onto,

always scared of the invisible monster out there,

and always fearful of becoming plagued.

Marionettes can’t hug and kiss,

shop in their favourite stores,

dine at their most-loved restaurants,

see their friends and families,

and take bus trips by themselves;

people couldn’t do that

for quite some time.

We hid inside

our toy chests

until the world

became as clear as mineral water.
