MANHOLE

Right words Ordered wrong

Listless leaves scatter then coalesce

Drainage blocked

Water pools

Pressure builds

pushing, slithering, winding through

drip,

drip,

drip

one drop; then two; yet another

manna from heaven

providing another day in hell

The open mouth, desperate, patient, pleading for release.

The encased heart, beating, steady, pushing forward.

The broken body, torn, shriveled, bent double.

You walk by every day, but you do not see.

A hand, it once reached out.

The other dug a hole.

In that hole, no bigger than a man

Will you now find my hand.
