Man Sober
My 12 Steps to Sobriety from Men
1. My creativity rendered me powerless over confusing potential with reality, which led to my romantic life becoming highly fictionalized. I turned three good conversations, one vulnerable admission, and a shared interest in rock music into a thirty-year emotional forecast.
2. Attraction alone has historically hijacked my judgment and my sanity. Butterflies in my stomach have led to legal documents I was obligated to sign.
3. I will stop auditioning for love and see who sticks around when I stop performing and can just be myself.
4. I inventoried my dating patterns and I have a type: emotionally unavailable men with the inability to take accountability for any wrongdoing.
5. Admitted to myself that I believed red flags waving directly in front of me indicated a celebration.
6. I am ready to stop confusing anxiety for chemistry. If I am unable to eat, unable to focus, and compelled to reread one text fourteen times, I am not in love. I am participating in recreational emotional distress.
7. Humbly ask for the strength to stop romanticizing men who dislike me.
8. I could write a series of novels about all the times I abandoned myself and accepted crumbs hoping to keep someone.
9. Made amends to myself by no longer volunteering for Emotional Neglect Community Service.
10. I will never, never again ignore my intuition.
11. Sought through tears, pints of Ben & Jerry’s, angsty poems, and lots of sleep, the ability to distinguish between love and limerence.
12. Having experienced a relational awakening, I will not download any dating apps, reopen any situationships, or respond to “you up?”
**********************************************************************I saw a preview for a new movie on Netflix called Letters to Isabelle and at one point the lead actress Zoey Deutch, who I think is adorable, says "I'm boy sober." It made me realize, I need to be Man Sober.
I created this based on the 12 Steps of Alcoholic's Anonymous.
Constructive feedback is welcome and appreciated.
Also, I love men, but choose the wrong men, though they don't always appear wrong in the beginning.
