An Elegy to My Mother

You were my everything

And I thought I knew

How much you meant to me

But my aching heart shows

How wrong I was

How little I knew

About your place in my life

* * *

My best friend—

An ear to listen

A shoulder for me to cry on

A smile to reflect my own

A laugh for me to share

* * *

My mentor—

My guiding light in this dark world

Forever showing me the path to take

Keeping me from straying

Never to diminish

* * *

Mama—

Lost without your presence

Struggling to find my place

Empty without your warmth

—Will it return?

* * *

I thought I knew how much you meant to me

But you don’t really miss the sun until it’s gone

Its warmth forever out of reach

Yet its light reflected in the moon

Giving hope that it will rise on another day

Elegy
