Wake up

Too early

Go to sleep

...

Wake up

It's noon

Hungry

Scrounge

Lay down

Fall asleep

...

Wake up

It's dinnertime

Smile

Eat

Pretend

Lay down

Wide-eyed

Distract yourself

...

Awake

It's midnight

Too late

Heart race

Swallow pills

Pass out

...

Wake up

This is the third poem in RE: SURGENCE, a poetry collection by Amanda Starks that shares what it's like to have and fight against mental illness in a free-form, lyrical prose.

Be aware that topics and themes may include suicide, self-harm, and isolation.
