Lola, Oh Lola

lyric

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished 5 months ago 2 min read

(Verse 1)

Born in the winter of 1943, Lola lived a dutiful, quiet life

Three different men to call her own, a three-time faithful wife

Three sons, three grandsons, the men all gathered 'round

But the free-love spirit in her soul never made a sound

verse 2

She wrote pages in a notebook, filled with childish dreams

Angst-filled rhymes and feelings bursting at the seams

A lonely teenaged heart trapped inside a woman’s head

Lola, oh Lola, oh, the words she never said.

(Chorus)

Three husbands, three sons, three grandsons in a line

Earning her self-worth, she was just killing off time

Trying to please them, taking on their shape

Reflecting their desires, never finding an escape

Lola, oh Lola, in the shadows you remain

Lola, oh Lola, you only danced in the rain.

(Verse 3)

She traded her sacred womanhood to fit into their mold

Their aspirations burning, while her own dreams turned cold

She couldn't let it go, couldn't breathe or find the calm

Just living in the echoes of a lonely, distant poem

Verse 4

Now the house is silent, high up on the hill

The husbands all are gone now, the air is deathly still

Two resting on the mantle, one moved on to pasture new

While she devours books of fantasy, just trying to get through.

(Verse 5)

The evening light is fading now, the house is growing dim

She looks upon the mantle shelf, at memories of them

Her closely cropped white hair reflects the soft and silver moon

A different kind of luster in the quiet afternoon

Verse 6

Her Deep brown eyes are closing as the shadows start to grow

Releasing all the heavy grief she carried long ago

With a heart that’s finding peace at last, the spirit finds its way

Beyond the tired ruminations at the end of the day.

(Outro)

Three husbands...

Three sons...

Three grandsons...

Lola... oh, Lola.

(Fade out)
