Living In Fear
With somber sleepy eyes I stand and look,
Over the years I’ve been given, the roads that I took.
There were many adventures to which I lay claim,
Perhaps you, a fellow sojourner, can say the same.
Gatherings and celebrations from the days of my youth,
Were few and far between but reflected an untold truth.
In hollow halls walked ghosts of denial,
Inside rooms echoed whispers of things so vile.
They say that love comes in many forms,
I’m not sure what was seen was considered norm.
Raw conversations behind closed doors were heard,
Yelling and shouting, voices becoming absurd.
Continuing the voyage on this sea called life,
It was those hidden secrets that caused great strife.
Uneasiness walked unrestrained in the shadowy rooms,
Some days more so than others but each shrouded gloom.
It wasn’t my place to set things in order,
For children were to be seen, staying within borders.
Cowering in corners, tears flowed like rivers,
Standing, watching, feeling my body quiver.
There are visions that I now want to forget,
Those flashes of colors, and images make me upset.
But try as I may, they still linger near,
And over and over again I experience the fear.
I pray in time that these ghosts go away,
Taking their sorrow, tears, and fear of those days.
But, alas, if the truth be made known,
They will remain within me until I am called home.
