On my way out to the yard
I grab the handled lantern jar
The gleeful squeals of
Fading summer linger on the threshold
The scent of cut grass
Wafting on the breathy breeze
Carrying stars in
Swirling drafts glowing
Like a stream of dreams
I wander through
Blinking constellations
Capture the miracle of
Natural green light behind
Curved walls of glass
Smiles diving and swerving
Like kingfishers in tall reeds
Clay streaked hands slip luminant quarry
Beneath the tin lid before
Bare feet run all new paths in the greenery
Green streaked knees and
Popsicle sweetened lips
Pump and giggle in the
Darkening past
A lightning lantern, my only light
I grasp at sheaves of blackening grass
The night gives way to dawn
When I awake
All is gone
But an old lantern
Filled with fairly lights
Hung from the rafters
