Life, Part One

My Journey Through Washington State

"It starts as a forest"

It starts as a forest,

Breathing, thriving.

Every drop of rain

the start of another life.

A towering tree

Covering, cowering,

Looking down on the flowering

world from above.

A tender vine

with its bittersweet thorn,

delicately kissed by sun.

A nursery safe

for each flower and leaf

as they grow through the spring

to satisfy summer.

A nettle

stinging

all who dare tread harshly.

Guardian of the small things.

A feeble appearance at most,

standing its post,

Keeping the forest beautiful.

A fungus

Slippery on the forest floor.

Observing, Exploring

from below,

Knowing everything you can't know,

The summary of its existence

Just by Existing.

An alga

Floating on the water's surface,

Neither above nor below.

A world in itself,

A plane all its own,

Watching

Squirming

Breathing

Laughing

Loving

Life.
