You keep some strange company

In this late night haunt of yours

And in the room’s dim lighting

Your features begin shifting

You’re just a face in the crowd

A crowd of carbon-copies

All consuming the same cons

In this den of self-deceit

Are you aware that it’s black?

The liquid you're throwing back

It’s staining your lips and tongue

But you couldn’t have known that

Since you’ve stabbed out your own eyes

I recall they were once green

Do you remember daylight?

No, you’ve forsaken the sun.

Did you choke on the first lie?

Or did it go down easy?

At what point did you begin

To regurgitate the words?

Was it before or after

You enslaved your heart and mind

To the hoax they all worship?

You slide a glass down the bar

As the torch bearers gather

Expectation presses in

With an unspoken promise

In one way we are alike

Misplacing some of our trust

But you’ll see in what comes next

We are very different

For if these are my choices

Drink the draught of delusion

Or march the path to the pyre

I guess I’m ready to burn
