Lessons of Heartbreak
Pain is a good teacher
Heartbreak.
It changes you,
Regardless of if you are the one being heartbroken,
Or the breaker.
The change allows you to peer into a place unknown,
A place of absolute loss.
A place of absolute terror.
I believe it is there you get to know your true self.
How do you overcome such pain?
The realization of abandonment,
The understanding of grief.
You have to rise, or else let yourself die,
Because time moves on regardless.
Without heartbreak,
Life is innocent.
Things are pure, and untouched.
But as more and more pain transpires,
The heart slowly begins to change.
The world grows a tint darker,
People and smiles become less friendly.
Are they real?
Or is this another facade?
Will I lose out again?
The paranoia and the apathy,
This too must be overcome.
If it isn’t,
Life becomes death while still breathing.
But these changes one must not fear,
It is from these that we gain our wits,
We know a good man from a bad,
A kind-hearted woman from a cold one.
It gives us an understanding,
To those wicked,
Those who have not overcome heartbreak,
Perhaps to see them as not just wicked,
But people who are trapped.
And so heartbreak is a most necessary thing,
Almost as necessary as breathing,
Not only to humble our bones,
But to learn to love more so than we could before.
