Legacy of the heart

will you break the cycle

Broken down and torn apart

Never knowing who is true at heart

The wind carries you to and from many places

But it always seems to come back to the same cold faces

Abuse comes in many shapes and sizes

Neglect also has many disguises

You go on living in denial, looking for an end

But that is really where the cycle begins

Generations of pain and regret

Emptiness and failure unable to forget

Wanting and needing to feel loved by anyone

Even negative attention seems like some fun

Numbness consumes your heart and mind

You start to wonder, “What’s the point of being kind?”

Finally, when things are looking brighter

You start to over analyze and your chest gets tighter

Tears swell up as old memories flood your mind

You think, “How can I be so blind?”

“All the world has to offer is pain and sorrow”

“I can never think good about tomorrow”

You get defensive and put up your protective wall

Manipulation becomes your secret weapon for all

You’ll never see yourself like this, but it’s all true

It’s like a genetic disorder, programmed into you

Until you choose to see your errors and that of past generations

And forgive past or present transgressions

Your plan to break the cycle will be thrown out the door

And you and those around you will suffer even more.

Will you allow them to carry on the true legacy of your heart

Or will they too be broken down and torn apart
