Drums
Drums
Drums
In the deep
Bellowed through Moria
Sounding defeat...
The bells
The bells
They toll for thee
Heathens condemned
With self-righteous pleas...
Bang
Bang
Bang
Liberty's gavel sings with glee
A just sentence passed
All jurors agree...
These notes of finality
Understood in universality
...Unless…
A flaw in Columbia’s armor
Renders her unsafe harbor
Shielded by immunity
Nero may fiddle with impunity

It seemed so final... I felt like I was getting the first half, an then at the swerve, I got lost and wondered whether there were historical references I wasnt getting - which, with my history knowledge, would not be hard.
Oooh!! LOTR reference with a side of .... politics? Such a creative -- and I hope not prescient -- pastiche.
You have truly captured the primal essence of drums, bells, and gavels with a precision..... A stirring and thought-provoking poem!
After I finished reading I asked myself “did I just read a poem about middle earth, the Catholic Church, a courtroom, lady liberty, and a Roman emperor?” And I think I did! a false sense of sanctuary along with the repetitive sound sequences were great connecting threads
The use of drums, bells, and bangs creates an atmosphere of tension and impending doom, this piece evokes powerful emotions and encourages contemplation on themes of justice and societal flaws, thank you very much for sharing, love your works, hope to read more, subscribed.
Stunning, sublime and stirring are the first words that come to find. A little bit of history, little bit of Tolkein, and those very striking bits of repetition. Impressive work, Matthew!
