I laugh and you smile.
It seemed so simple for awhile.
But you say my heart is cold and closed
To the beauty of affection.
Telling me I’ve built a wall,
Tall and to perfection.
You laugh and I smile.
Sitting in silence for a while.
Thinking of how I am merely a mirror
Reflecting back your projection.
My stillness makes you turn to go,
And I know it’s self-protection.
Neither laugh nor smile.
I won’t be seeing you for a while.
I learn you’d rather close the door
Than risk any rejection.
Your ego hurt, its countenance chilling,
Killing any real connection.
