Pine. Opine.

Goodbyes will come at the beginning.

Because love is set with limit not seen,

Love’s timer commenced ticking

as understanding dawned, throat becomes

primed to eject primal mourning wail, head

submerged only below water level, rage

and disbelief can pretend they are codes

locked inside clarity, sanctuary

in emerging bubbles.

Curiosity. Singe.

Hellos will come as trials.

failure is reality, in hindsight.

Which hand lit the candle?

Which eye looked?

I felt burn

of recognition

but

You had already

escaped

the marriage bed

Madness waiting

to Catch

You

Downhill.

Endure.

Ascend.

The rain patters

more gently now.

Fills the lagoon

to swelling point.

Untended

solitary flames

lick the air

and want to

Fan into wildfire.

—the storm is insistence.

An uneasy

immortality

spit out in

afterbirth.
