Lab Grown Flower
They grew me under glass,
where daylight never came,
fed me drops of colour,
then whispered me a name.
My roots knew no garden,
no worms beneath my feet,
only little silver tubes,
keeping my heartbeat sweet.
They painted me in pink,
put green inside my veins,
taught my petals how to smile,
but never taught me rain.
I watched the wild ones dancing,
bending with the breeze,
while I stood behind the glass,
dreaming I was free.
At night I heard the moonlight,
tapping on my wall,
telling me the outside world,
was waiting for my call.
So I cracked my little bottle,
and crawled across the floor,
dragging all my tiny roots,
towards the laboratory door.
The moon looked rather startled,
when she first noticed me,
a flower made by clever hands,
escaping to be free.
I planted myself deeply,
where nobody could see,
and waited for the morning,
to decide what I would be.
The rain came down and touched me,
like something I had known,
and every drop reminded me,
I could survive alone.
Now I bloom among the wild ones,
stranger than the rest,
lab grown but still a flower,
with freedom in my chest.
