For some, home was never a place of peace, love, and happiness. No memory of a house of happy children prevails. Instead, home life was simply a nightmare of horror without hope. Indeed, the psychosis of pain mixed with the chaos of doom from the narratives and folktales of Korean cinematic horror (K-horror) discloses the recurring remembrance of lost childhoods full of the mental anguish of emotional abuse, the sufferings of physical abuse, and the torture of sexual abuse.
In the land of NeoConfucianism, where the cult of Patriarchy demands men to rule while women are to be subservient, the abuse against women, especially girls, seem to come at the highest cost of spiritual barrenness. Many of the classics from K-horror are basically matriarchal calls for vengeance. For those girls who were silenced, raped, and murdered, their liminal spirits became undead virgin hungry ghosts or gwishin. Perpetually, they hunger for transcendent justice.
Eternally, they become undead children searching for the promised home of peace, love, and happiness. Often in K-horror, one sees small virgin ghost girls with long hair lost, confused, and abandoned. This chapter will examine Korean cinematic classics like: Hansel & Gretel (2007), based on German tales by Brothers Grimm, where it morphs into a strange Korean tale of horror. In this tale, we are exposed to the House of Happy Children, an orphanage of doomed children.
Thank you for reading. A publishers is waiting for this. I must finish it.
To me, these examples of K-horror are not fictional, but they represent realities that many Korean women live in.
Surviving my cancer years, at a hospital, dressed as demon. LOL. This is me teaching mindful meditation as a monster.
