Just a Normal Day
If real horror scares you, maybe pass this one... it's based on another of my nightmares.
It was just a normal day.
Full of the hustle and bustle
of new school shoes on squeaky-clean floors.
Lockers slammed.
Textbooks opened.
Pages being flipped.
The smell of freshly printed syllabus,
expo markers
and school lunch
swirled through the halls.
It was just a normal day.
Students scurried as the bell for lunch rang.
There’s a clatter of trays
mixed with the grumble of tummies.
It was just a normal day.
Then a sound broke the normalcy.
A scream,
multiple screams…
Then the intense stomping of frantic feet running.
Trays are being dropped as teachers usher for everyone to head to safety.
Confusion.
It was just a normal day.
Huddled into the match class room,
we hear the screams continue.
Screams turn to whispers through out the room.
“An attack...”
“She lost it…”
“But no gun shots…”
…No gunshots.
An ear itching silence falls.
I feel nausea take over.
Something isn’t right.
Suddenly I’m inching towards the door,
why I’m not sure.
Is the horror done?
I just need to see…
I peek through the little window,
not at all prepared for what I might see.
My face falls white.
Stomach drops.
Legs wobble.
She made eye contact.
Blood covered her.
A large machete clutched by her side, clearly
showing an answer as to why it was silent…
I can’t look away.
Though I desperately wanted to.
I can’t break our locked eyes.
Until…
I turn my back to the door
and slide to the floor.
Hunching over, I hurl my
digested lunch to the floor.
I shut my eyes
and hug myself close.
It was just a normal day.
Until it wasn’t.
Until the bullied couldn’t take anymore.
Until she walked into our halls,
with a plan of death.
Until that silver broke the first skin.
Will it ever be just a normal day again?
