Half the year is gone now,
and time is accelerating
as I edge closer to the end of my stay here.

I never used to think like that
when I was a younger man.
Younger people feel immortal, you know,

way down deep in their minds.

But I am no longer a younger man,
and I’ve less time ahead of me
than I do behind.

Last week a sage told me
that 150,000 people or more
die every day,

and I checked it out – it’s true.

Between 150,000 and 170,000 people
don’t wake up in the morning,
and that could be you or me sometime soon.

I’m not writing this to be morbid,
or to freak you out. It’s just a memento mori
from me to you, me playing the Roman slave

reminding you: “Thou art mortal.”

Wherever you are on your path,
at whatever stage you find yourself
on your journey,

just make sure you’re doing what you love,
with those you love.
Because Anubis and his scales

could arrive at any moment.
