For Our Nation’s 250th Birthday

Fire in the sky

Bursts of blue, red, and white

As we celebrate our nation’s independence

Two hundred and fifty years

We come together as one

For just one day

But divisions still reign

Cracks in our nation’s foundation

Flawed leadership

Brainwashed masses

Forgetting that loyalty

Should be to the country

And not the man

But perhaps for just one day

We can push aside those differences

And remember what brought us together

In the first place

A country of differences that

United would stand

Divided would fall

So release the fireworks in solidarity

On the celebration of our nation’s birth

But never forget what it took to get us here

And take those lessons forth

To bring us back to unity

Author’s Note: I know this is a day early, but since I got the day off of work due to the Fourth of July, I thought that I would mark the occasion with a poem. I think that this country has its faults—including the one sitting in the Oval Office—but 250 years is an accomplishment, and I think that we can become a nation worth being proud of again if we come together like we do when celebrating.
