Photograph of a sunset in Idyllwild
We dressed in patriot’s colors, paper masks.
Our group was small, but festive; we had heart.
But “patriotic” was too much too ask;
We felt our country falling fast apart.
Our country was in chaos, so divided
As people disagreed on what was right;
And all the chaos quickly coincided
With this pandemic we still have to fight.
As we all posed in front of firs and pine
Our cameras flashed so quickly, blinding bright.
Obscured by fog on the horizon line,
The distant fireworks flashed throughout the night.
We celebrated not our history
But our shared hope for what there still could be.
