Join Our Flock

Like lambs led to the slaughter

We party, we smoke, we drink, we laugh

We all look good in our lovely dresses,

You’re welcome to join our flock of sheep

Look at us all, we’re so very precious.

***

We tend to group together in our flock

And ridicule all those that won’t,

We follow the flocks’ petty little rules

And destroy those of you who don’t.

***

We form into one large hive like mind

No longer need to think for ourselves,

It’s easier if we’re all on the same page

Peace in the flock, we are compelled.

***

The authorities try to set the rules

We believe we know better than them,

They’ve no way of knowing us at all

After all, we’re good young women.

***

We used to listen to both sides of things

We would daydream about tomorrow,

But once one sheep jumped over the fence

We were all very quick to follow.

***

Life was so good when you broke the rules

We realised we didn’t need to go to school,

We told each other we’d all be fine

Not realising, that all sheep are fools.

***

We were young and thought we’re tough

But really we were just treading water,

Now it’s time for the flock to leave school

Naive lambs heading to the slaughter.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

I so wanted to join the flock of sheep but at the end I was like "Oh, nevermind" 🤣
