Jack
A stray cat in the alley,
Seemed lost and all alone.
No posters up to say he was missing,
No offers of a good home.
That cat, he must have suffered.
Had he been thrown out or had he run away?
I suppose we’ll never find out,
The cat’s got nothing to say.
He looks at us with weary eyes.
He says, please give me some food.
And then someone just shushes him off,
And I think, oh God, that’s rude.
That poor little mite’s not eaten.
It’s an animal, but he has feelings too.
Why can you not just spare a little bit of something?
And God’ll bless you.
So I went home and I looked around,
I found a fish and a few pieces of meat.
And I went down the alley,
But he wasn’t there for me to meet.
I looked all down the street,
I don’t know where he had gone.
There was no stray cat down the alley anymore,
And the day just carried on.
I don’t know, had he gone back home?
Had his owners found him and taken him back?
I don’t even know his name,
Because he was black, I called him Jack.
God bless the cat from down the alley,
And I hope and pray you’re safe.
I came too late with food today,
I came too late and walked away.
But I hope your owners have come back,
And taken you away.
Wherever you are, dear little Jack,
May you be safe today.
