It Wasn't Like the First Time

Coping with unexpected loss and transition

It wasn’t like the first time,

The one with the subtle smile,

Those eyes that begged me, pleaded, ‘stay a while’.

It wasn’t like the first time,

When my heartbeat fluttered fast,

Erasing such sad notions of the past.

It wasn’t like the first time,

That called us close together,

Let us float away upon a feather.

It wasn’t like the first time,

This changed us in an instant,

Deep inside your eyes, I felt so distant.

The flutters faded, stalled in weight,

The joys of shared history stumbled,

The light it dimmed; all closed in, it crumbled,

It wasn’t like the first time,

Though I saw you standing proud,

Guilt wracked me, so unsure of what’s allowed.

It wasn’t like the first time,

This time I forced a smile,

Those eyes still begging, ‘please, just stay a while’.

Show me how.
