IT’S NOT A DEAD POETS SOCIETY
-at least not as far as I’m concerned-
I listen to the poetry of others
And although it is most profound,
I’ve noticed there’s some confusion
In the faces of some others around.
It would seem that they’ve lost understanding
In what it is they thought they just heard.
It’s not always easy to follow
Someone else’s thoughts put into words.
Some look around in amusement
Not sure as to why they are here.
Some others sit with intensity
And listen while straining their ears.
It’s not easy being a poet,
Especially if one like to rhyme.
But I can think of nothing more peaceful
Or a better way to spend some of my time.
It’s not a Dead Poet’s Society –
We’re alive and to our hearts delight,
We have those who have learned to appreciate
Almost anything that we can write.
(Before hurricane Charley blew the café down (literally) I belonged to a Poets’ Club in my neighborhood. We would meet every Wednesday at six in the early evening, and over tea or coffee, would listen to and enjoy each other’s written words. Once Charley knocked the building down, there was no longer anywhere to meet.)
