The creak of the chair as I sit down
The wheels rolling slightly as I adjust my position
The slightly loose chair back that squeaks when I lean on it
It’s mundane, but it’s comfort
The click the knob makes as I turn on my mirror light
The coolness that flows through my fingers as I fiddle with the metal mirror frame
The slight annoyance I feel when the chair rolls over the lamp cord
It’s mundane, but it’s comfort
The sweet smell of vanilla and flowers as I apply moisturizer
The makeup brushes tapping together as I rummage through them
The snap the eyeshadow palette makes when I open it
It’s mundane, but it’s comfort
The bloop sound that the primer makes as I squeeze the tube
The slight sweep of a brush across my eyelids as I apply eyeshadow
The shine the highlighter leaves on my cheekbones
It’s mundane, but it’s comfort
The cool mist hitting my face as I set it with makeup spray
The snap the lipstick component makes as I close it
The feeling of joy I get when I look in the mirror and see my creativity has come alive
It’s mundane, but it’s my comfort

Cupid's Kiss
Daphne had never been one to buy into all the Valentine’s Day craze. To her it was just another day and if you were lucky, you may get some chocolates. However, this year, something piqued her interest. Everyone at school had been going on about the new viral challenge. The aptly named Cupid’s Kiss Challenge. This wasn’t just any game though, this was a paranormal one. Daphne loved reading about the supernatural and has even played a game or two with no consequences. So, upon hearing about the Cupid’s Kiss Challenge, Daphne was intrigued.

One Minute to Noon
“OK, guys!” I screech over the macaw-like chatter in my sophomore English class. My students are sharing mementos they accumulated during summer vacation. The assignment is to interview each other and write an expository essay about another student’s treasure: Misty’s coquina shells and sand dollars from Florida, Ruth’s two Navajo pottery mugs from New Mexico, Roxy’s perfume from Paris, Kevin’s chocolate from Hershey Pennsylvania, a picador’s sword from a bullfight in San Fermin Spain, where one of my favorite students, Manny Pérez, ran with the bulls at festival.
