It’s Just A Bunch Of Hocus Pocus
Or Is It?
Instinctively, I look over my shoulder.
Tonight is All Hallows Eve, after all.
Surely, spirits and ghouls are lurking about.
~
Jack-o'-lanterns adorn every porch and stoop,
Ushering away evil spirits.
Scarecrows stand guard over late-season crops.
The crows perch upon their limbs in absolute indifference.
~
Absentmindedly, a witch gathers the ingredients for her evening meal.
~
Bats call out to one another
Under the light of the full moon.
Night has now fallen.
Children are ready for the celebrations soon to start.
Homes are illuminated with candlelight -
~
Only if they are ready to welcome treat-seeking guests.
Father lights our Jack-o'-lanterns.
~
Hundreds of candles now light up the windows along our road.
On Halloween night, the children pour out of their homes and run amok on the eve.
Cats of pure black stealthily stick to the shadows, their watchful gazes monitoring the reverie.
Under the light of the moon, those shadows have an intimidating presence about them,
Shifting as they do.
~
Playing tricks on our minds
Oh! Are we bewitched?
Cup to my lips, a calming tea to soothe my nerves.
Undeniably, this night is not for the faint of heart.
Spooky happenings are seemingly just out of sight, yet I hear their cries, screeches, and somebody screaming “BOO!”
~
It’s all just a bunch of hocus pocus, they say, but I believe in the supernatural. Do you?
