It's About Time We All See Therapists
"Healing takes time, and asking for help is a courageous step." Mariska Hargitay
WHO states;
"Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being
And not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
By implication;
Mental health is more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.
It is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities,
Can cope with the normal stresses of life,
Can work productively,
And is able to make a contribution to his or her community.
How many of us are able to do all that?
I don't think very many of us…
As if Covid-19 wasn't enough;
And the difficulties that it came with,
Or living with the perpetual anxiety of what tomorrow holds!
We still have the uncertainty of the US presidential elections
And its rippling effect throughout the world…
We haven't finished mourning George Floyd and his peers,
We now have extrajudicial killings of citizens;
By government in the most populous country in West Africa.
Then there are the bushfires, floods, tsunamis, floods, and riots…
And yet, we ought to keep on living and grinding…
These are not normal stresses of life;
They are so much more!
And that's modest by many standards.
Our lives have been spared;
But our mental healths have taken a beating;
So much that we each are entitled to a therapist.
Or however, it is we can fully process…
My people suffer and smile!
We try to live one day at a time,
We try to be strong,
We try to cope…
We carry on like business as usual;
Yet we are cracked up inside
If we are barraged once again,
We might fall flat on our faces!!!
