It’ll Take A Little More Effort

She’ll not be reeled in

A trail of crumbs, a come-hither-to,

A low effort throw to see what you’ll catch,

A single word, two at the most,

A fisherman’s game — is she still attached?

**

She smiles at the sheer audacity,

Wiser than the credit of your insult,

She whistles through a more powerful message,

Leaving you to ponder the final result.

**

She values consistency, wary of the hot to cold,

Intolerant of the usual games at play,

Goodbye is goodbye — no matter the language sent,

And her response …… well, what more can she say?

**

Silence is a powerful answer,

And yet she’ll still sleep the entire night through,

Breadcrumbs not enough to reel her in,

Not after the disconnect between the two.

**

Her day doesn’t change because of solitude,

No, her peace reigns high, tethered to her smile,

She walks through nature, totally undaunted,

Her feet still trekking through each mile.

**

Nothing changes in her world,

Self sufficiency an absolute must,

The rest taken with a pinch of salt,

Independence within is what she trusts.

**

She’ll rise tomorrow without regret,

Water off a duck’s back,

She’s gifted with all she’ll ever need,

Bypassing the crumbs thrown — she’s back on track.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
