IT AIN’T HALF A FUNNY OLD WORLD

It ain’t half a funny old world,
The things that come and go,
One minute you think you’ve cracked it,
The next you just don’t know.

You spend your youth wanting older,
Then age comes knocking fast,
You’d give your Sunday dinner,
To have your young legs back.

We worry about tomorrow,
Then tomorrow worries too,
While yesterday sits laughing,
At the things we didn’t do.

We fall in love with wrong ones,
Ignore the ones who care,
Then spend our nights remembering,
A love no longer there.

We save our best for later,
Our dresses and our wine,
Then later comes and tells us,
You should have worn them at the time.

We buy things we don’t need,
Then lose what money can’t buy,
We laugh when we should worry,
And smile when we want to cry.

We spend years chasing something,
That always moves away,
Then find the thing we wanted,
Was beside us every day.

A kettle and a biscuit,
A telephone that rings,
A brother making nonsense,
Can be the richest things.

A dog can steal your slippers,
A parrot answer back,
A photograph can take you,
Down some forgotten track.

A stranger becomes a lover,
A lover becomes a ghost,
And sometimes those who leave us,
Are the ones we feel the most.

We enter with no luggage,
Yet gather loads somehow,
Old letters, scars and memories,
And wrinkles on our brow.

Then one day we look backwards,
At roads where we have been,
The beautiful, the bloody daft,
And everything between.

And maybe life ain’t perfect,
Perhaps it never should,
For tears make laughter sweeter,
And bad makes precious good.

So let the whole world wobble,
Let plans become unfurled,
I’ll laugh while I am able—
It ain’t half a funny old world.
