Island of the Motherland

Over the seas to the land filled with heat

The Ẹyọ Festival in Lagos, Nigeria

Fear consumed me that fateful day

When we embraced and mingled in the heaven

Over the seas to a land of red clay

Blistering wet heat showered us with aggression

Ekabo, welcome to your native land

Nigeria, the dawn of your creation

Torrid beachy sands continued to expand

The colorful markets multiplied with variation

The eyo masquerades filled the Balewa Square

And danced and danced to usher in the king

The drums enchanted everyone into their snare

As we all joined in to sing

Fire filled my heart with an experience I will forever hold

The summer I spent in Nigeria, engraving my heart with gold
