Iris

By Iris Bailey

I was named after a purple flower,

Purple is my mother’s favorite color.

She loves purple slushies, even if she has to mix them herself.

She loves amethyst and figs and grape jolly ranchers.

I was named after the Flash’s girlfriend,

A fierce reporter, traditionally with fiery red hair and personality to match,

Who spent a great deal of time being rescued by the Scarlet Speedster,

Now played by the beautiful Candice Patton.

I was named after a Goo Goo Dolls song,

That my mom heard in a coffee shop before she met me.

The album cover is the balck silhouette of a man, against an off white background.

He’s about to jump.

I was named after the goddess of the rainbow,

Messenger to Hera, Sister to the Harpies.

I was named after a bright and glowing Grim Reaper,

Who brought those who died too soon down to Hades.

I have looked at all these things, all these reasons my mother named me. And in my years, I have been all of these things but now I wear the rainbow, and I always will. I have found my own meaning and some may coincidence,

I say fate.
