A Poem

When I close my eyes to sleep at night
and drift away to dream,
I see a light at the end of a long hallway
that looks like it's winking at me.

And I wonder if I'm going crazy,
or I wonder if I'm lost
in these liminal spaces within our minds
that don't let us see the cost
of all the choices that we make in life
every single day.

And I wonder when
this weird lighted dream
will ever go away.

And I start to walk down the hall
toward the winking light
and realize it's a glowing eyeball
shining through the nightmares.

The eyeball closes
and I wake up
feeling like I never slept.

And each morning after I've wept,
I just want to close my eyes
and look into that iris once again.

Because at least for once,
I feel like I was seen.
