The perfect pumpkin

No, not that winding path!

It leads to a canopied grove.

While it may be a glorious place

to bask in Fall’s plentiful trove,

you should listen to me and pay attention,

For I, in the patch, am this day’s mission.

No, thankfully, you didn’t wander

from your intended route;

you’ve arrived at the right destination

to select the perfect fruit.

If you listen again to my sage advice,

you’ll discover it before your eyes.

No, not that one!

You must choose me!

You see, I am perfect…

for exactly what you need.

I’ve plenty of pulp for cookies and pies

My vow to you: I’m worth your time.

No, not there, look back here!

Ignore those beneath the trees.

The filtered dampness keeps them

from being half as nice as me.

I’m the utter best of all the rest

in Autumn’s vibrant treasure chest.

No, don’t lift your eyes!

Despite that colorful cheer,

they’ve not a thing to do

with the reason that you’re here.

Forget the leaves; look down, not around,

Then lift me carefully from the ground.

No, don’t dare lose focus now!

I see you inhaling in all directions

the tempting aromas

of fragrant confections,

swaying you from your task.

Again, choose me, I ask!

Yes, at last! You finally listened

and picked the best for Halloween!

Now breathe in the season, the crispness of Fall

before cleaning and carving so I can be seen

lighting outside with a wide crooked grin

while sniffing my scent from the oven within!
