dishonest work

My husband is doing

work for John again,

claiming

no remembrance

of the SEC investigation

John brought

into our lives and home

in Augusta,

but I remember

when this slick-talking

disbarred attorney and his

shady deals, promises of

worthless shares in companies

with no product, a shell game

to fuck some money

out of someone else, all

riddled with condescension,

stood in my living room

pretending

to some non-existent throne,

meringue in the sky

just an unsqueezed lemon,

an engine making noise

about going somewhere,

poised on blocks

nowhere near the chassis,

no roadmap, just promises

breaking like waves, crashing,

always crashing

into a salty mist

of seaspray, evaporating

into the nothing

it always was

before the documents

explored every shade

of charcoal, rain, and slate.
