Insomnia

I can't sleep

I can't sleep.

Insomnia.

How strange that such a beautiful word

can describe something so unbearably paralyzing.

I desire,

to drift down,

submerge in the fluffy pillows

to a land of dreams

and confusion

and necessary rest.

But here I lie,

while the world breathes deeply

inhaling

exhaling

into the dark night.

My eyes are closed

but my mind is alive,

daring me to be useful

as my energy fades.

For some reason, it doesn't allow me

to float away,

into soft sleep.

I am a dolphin,

eyes wide asleep.

What dangers must I contend with,

in the safety of my bed?

I'll keep wishing for sleep,

long after the sun has risen.

You would never know

I like sunrise the best.

But you may be surprised by

how often I am awake to see it.
