Insomnia has ruined my life

And still no one cares

Insomnia has ruined my life

Insomnia has ruined my life,
Through my teens and being a wife,
I close my eyes and beg for sleep,
While round the clock the hours creep.

I watch the numbers changing slow,
Another hour, where did it go,
I turn around and try again,
But sleep won’t come inside my brain.

I wish that I could close my eyes,
Then wake eight hours later surprised,
Oh God, I slept, I’d gladly say,
I slept the whole damn night away.

But no, not me, I get an hour,
Then sleep has lost its bloody power,
Two hours sometimes, that’s my lot,
It ruins the happiness I’ve got.

I hear the morning coming near,
The daylight that I almost fear,
Because another night has gone,
And somehow I must carry on.

I yawn all day and close my eyes,
I’m tired beneath the morning skies,
when the night comes round once more,
I’m wide awake like nights before.

The doctor says no sleeping pills,
But he can’t know just how this feels,
It’s fine for those who sleep all night,
Then wake up rested with the light.

I’m growing older, growing grey,
From chasing sleep that runs away,
Ten minutes here, an hour there,
Sometimes it feels like no one cares.

I don’t want much, I never did,
Just sleep beneath my bedroom quilt,
To close my eyes and drift away,
And wake refreshed to face the day.

I want to know what others know,
That gentle place where sleepers go,
Where thoughts grow quiet in your head,
And dreams come softly to your bed.

Insomnia has stolen years,
And filled so many nights with tears,
But every morning I still rise,
No matter how exhausted my eyes.

Perhaps one night my sleep will stay,
And carry all those thoughts away,
Till then I’ll face another night,
And wait once more for morning light.
