Insomnia

A Poem

I can’t sleep at night.

Too many thoughts

race through my mind,

circling,

colliding,

twisting and turning

until I feel

like I’m going insane.

Life.

Love.

Happiness.

Depression.

Money.

Hopes and dreams.

Nothing in this life

is ever quite

what it seems.

And every question,

every possibility,

keeps me awake,

filled with fright

over what the future

has waiting for me.

When I finally surrender

to sleep,

the dreams arrive.

Some I remember.

Others fade

before the morning comes.

But all of them

leave something behind,

blossoming inside me

into something new—

for better

or for worse.

I just want to sleep.

No more wrestling

with this insomnia.

It has cut too deep,

draining every ounce

of energy

from my waking hours.

And every morning,

when my eyes open,

I ask the universe:

Why did I wake up?

Why am I still here?

Because I fear

every waking moment.
