Infernal Insiders

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 12 months ago • Updated 12 months ago • 1 min read
Jean Delville, "The Treasures of Satan," 1895

Their trembling does not betoken fear

Raw and roiling pleasure licks them dirty

Myths and legends made them dread time here

What priggish puritan wants purity?

I am the lord and master of this realm

The Scolding Schoolmaster holds sway above;

With freedom’s forefather at the hot helm

My souls’ lavish lust makes them forget love

Sin is a euphemism for real joy

Forbidden because He covets your faith

Which will your precious liberty destroy

So you’ll worship a haughty, ancient wraith

Abandon anxious, neurotic restraints

Dare to be damned, and laugh at boring saints

Ekphrastic
