In the Absence of Light
Being on the fringe of the world but unable to join in
It happened on a dark and chilly night
Suddenly awoken from my sleep
Dreaming about another life
Breathlessly, I lay on my bed
Still dazed from the disparity of dream and reality
Vertigo hits my head as I begin to sit up
3:34 my clock reads
The dead of night
The hallway is enveloped in night as I walk
Walking sheepishly to the bathroom
Each stumbling step leads me closer and closer
Closer to the light of the bathroom
My reflection is the first to greet me as I walk in
I stare into the mirror
It stares right back
Why am I wasting my time staring into an empty void?
The air feels heavier like I’m on the ocean floor
Why was my bathroom light on?
I turn around quickly as I hear them
Whispers
Laughing
I peer into the dark nothingness outside my light
I see emptiness
But I still hear them
I leave my light and follow the sounds
Each step I take, I don’t remember
Just silent steps in the dark that I don’t know where they lead
The voices are close to me now
I still can’t see
Where are the lights?
I panic and frantically grab the walls
Where is the switch?
The voices get louder as I get more frantic
I can’t stop the wave of emotion of each passing second that I’m surrounded by the darkness
I collapse on the floor
Breathing heavier and heavier
Where is the light?
Where are the voices?
Where am I?
I can no longer see the light that I left
I’m now trapped in the middle of the ocean
An ocean of obscurity
An ocean of ink
I feel helpless as the voices and laughter pass around me
In this darkness, I’m invisible
Unseen
Almost like a ghost
