In-Betweens of the Last and Least

No Respect, Not Spoken

after a long in-between,

a need comes to your mind

you want something, so here you come

after the long in-betweens, maybe a call

**

I’m from your past, fun and happy times

but am now treated as a forgotten bridge,

like an old book kept on a dusty shelf

until

you need

information

advice

comfort

agreement

sounding board for vexations

Or

guilt maybe makes you seek my company for dinner,

a rest stop from the long road,

a pick-me-up before you head off

to rest your eyes, converse, share a bite, but the constant

pings on the cellphone interrupt

it never leaves your side

**

the distance detachment leaves my tongue bitter

I bite it rather than spear you with it

gone, gone, do you realize it’s over?

doubtful, for self-absorption blinds you

**

I’m not your stepstool, hide-a-bed, or convenience

**

I know now and sadly accept that I am last and least

no discussion needs to flow

it would stick in the forked disarray of your priorities, one of which I am not

the neglect and self-indulgence created a chasm

no more long in-betweens

there wasn't a together, I see it now,

only a poorly delineated sideline

and that’s not my type of sport
